This Month's FK
The next Film Kitchen takes place on Tuesday, January 13, at 8pm at the Melwood Screening Room in North Oakland.

This Month:

A Ride Through the Fields,” a short fantasy / science-fiction film from the 1970s by director Michael Lies, features the first paid work for Savini, who went on to fame for his gruesome special effects in such films as Dawn of the Dead, Friday the 13th and Creepshow. In “Ride,” Savini helped bring to life the literary figures who spring from some books discovered by the 14-minute film’s protagonist, a woman on horseback whose encounter is simultaneously watched by scientists at the Allegheny Observatory and Allegheny General Hospital.

Lies also presents “Headprints,” his stream-of-consciousness short, set in Oakland, about an encounter with extraterrestrials and an escaped mental patient.

Also at Film Kitchen are documentaries by John Landis, whose work turns conventional views of the world on their sides to reveal new perspectives. Included is “Telemarketer,” which encourages the audience to see this most despised of professions in a sympathetic light.

The Jan. 13 program also includes “Barking Lane,” Sean Ferris’ beautifully shot black-and-white short about a drifter hobo who comes to town. The 10-minute film feastures thrilling bike rides, murderand more.

Lies, Landis and Ferris will attend for question-and-answer sessions.
The Jan. 13 show begins at 8 p.m., with a pre-show reception at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.

Film Kitchen is cosponsored by Pittsburgh Filmmakers, City Paper, WYEP FM, Digital Video Development, Chipotle, Rock Light, and DH Creative.
